TFN Video Blog - Sarah: Talent Crush

Hi, my name is Sarah Shankman with Theater Fanatic, and I have a theater story for you.  So, the Cherry Lane Theatre is in my neighborhood, so I try to go and support them as much as I can, and the Barefoot Theater Company recently did two shows there and I went to go see them, and there was this one guy and he played two totally different characters.  First he played this really flamboyant gay guy who was struggling with having AIDS, and didn't want to talk about it, and didn't care, and then finally he comes to terms with it and it was a really incredible performance and totally moved me.  And then a few months later they did this very avant garde piece where he played this butch cop who was kind of like "lady killer," and he ended up dying.  I went to go see it with my friend who knew the company and had a few friends in it, and at the end of the show I was like, "Oh my god, that guy is so cute, like, who is that?  Do you know him?  Like, could you hook that up?"  And she was like, "Sarah, you know him.  Like, he was the guy who was in the other show."  And I was like, "What? No!  Oh my god, you have to be kidding, like, I had no idea."  Oh, you've never heard of a talent crush?  Oh, I totally get talent crushes.  Steve Buscemi is a perfect example of a talent crush.  'Cause you watch him on Boardwalk Empire and you think, "Wow, if I saw him walking down the street he would totally be super creepy and maybe like a pedophile, but on that show I would let him do terrible, dirty things to me."  You know what I mean?  So, like, it's when you ? it can work two ways, it can be like you meet someone and you think, "Oh no" and then you see their work and you're like, "Oh wait, maybe we should talk."  Or it's like you see their work in one way and they, like, play the pedophile and go, like ? it's like how I saw that guy play like the really flamboyant gay guy and I was like, "Oh he's so cute but like, I want to be friends with him and, like, have him be my wing man.  And then I saw him play like the sexy stud and I was like, "Oh, we should talk."  Thank you for watching me, Sarah Shankman, on Theater Fanatic Network.  Yeah!
